It's no secret that I absolutely adore reading. I remember the first book I learned to read was The Very Hungry Caterpillar. I pushed my four year old self hard to learn how to read because I wanted to impress my parents. In fact it's one of my earliest memories. As I grew older my thirst for knowledge and reading didn't subside. I'd like to share with you the books that shaped who I am today and changed my life. Tuesdays With Morrie There aren't many books by Mitch Albom that I haven't fall in love with; in fact I recently added listening to his podcast Tuesday People to my podcast repertoire. When I read Tuesdays With Morrie it was in honors English during middle school. Mitch's second chance with Morrie had such a profound effect on how I now view relationships with my loved ones. I realized that we don't all get that second chance and that it's important to cherish those loved ones while they're here. When I lost my great grandmother in 2006 I revisited this book and it helped me immensely through my grief. Dicey's Song I was absolutely obsessed with Dicey's Song my freshman year of high school. It's actually one book that is part of an entire series. I hungrily devoured each book re-reading them dozens of times. Cynthia Voigt's books resonated with me because of how quickly Dicey Tillerman, the main character, had to grow up. She became responsible for herself and siblings while she was still a child herself. Now that she has to relinquish those responsibilities it's time for her to figure out what her life will look like. It was this character that taught me impossible unthinkable things can happen to anyone. I was taught that with grit and determination bad circumstances of life can be turned around for the best. Farenheit 451 Ray Bradbury intended this novel to represent a far off dystopian future. Yet, somehow the novel he wrote in 1953 has managed to predict things that are occurring today. It was really jarring to me that the firemen run around to burn literature and the homes of those who possess it. However, I think that was Bradbury's intention; to evoke emotion from his reader about the improbabilities while highlighting the actualities. It was interesting to me to follow along in the book as Guy Montag becomes aware there's a deeper side to life. It was this book that brought awareness to me about society's complacency and how not to get so wrapped up in it. To me Ray Bradbury predicted the instant gratification and Kardashian-esk society we live in today.
